Award-Winning Search Engine Outperforms Leading Internet Search and Portal Sites in NPD Online Research Study for Fourth Consecutive Quarter

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – December 1, 2000 – Google Inc., developer of the award-winning Google search engine, today announced the results of a comprehensive research study conducted by NPD Online Research, in which Google placed first overall among 18 search and portal sites for relevant results and user satisfaction.

The Google users studied awarded Google the highest ratings in seven out of nine relevancy and user satisfaction categories. A total of 18 sites were represented in the survey, of which Google was first with the highest percentage of users who were "very satisfied"; 92 percent of its users profiled identifying Google as being much or somewhat better than any other site; 96 percent of its users finding what they are searching for all or most of the time; and 95 percent of its users indicating that they would recommend Google to a friend.

The quarterly NPD study, which gathered data from 19,357 Internet users, measured consumer opinions of and loyalty to leading search services, including AltaVista, AOL.com, Ask Jeeves, Excite, GO Network, Google, GoTo, HotBot, iWon, Lycos, MSN, Netscape, WebCrawler and Yahoo!.

"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by Internet users as the best search engine on the web quarter after quarter," said Larry Page, CEO and co-founder of Google.

Google users rated Google first in the following categories:

  • No. 1 in Comparison vs. Other Sites: Ninety-two percent of Google users surveyed rated it either much or somewhat better than other sites.
  • No. 1 for Relevant and Accurate Search Results.
  • No. 1 for Meeting the Needs of Users.
  • No. 1 for Ease-of-Use and Navigation.
  • No. 1 for Site Reliability.
  • No. 1 for Speed in Loading.
  • No. 1 for Up-to-Date Information.
  • No. 1 for Good Value for the Time Spent.

"We attribute much of our phenomenal growth to the large number of users who are recommending Google to a friend," said Sergey Brin, president and co-founder of Google. "This measurement is a magnificent reward for our continued obsession with creating the best user experience possible."
